A year has come and gone since the launch of MDG's website and blog, almost in the blink of an eye! What have we learned in the last twelve months? Among other things, we've learned that anyone and everyone will attempt The Mannequin Challenge, that you can take a picture of yourself giving yourself a high five, that chokers are back, that people will pay a lot of money to learn about a former president if Lin Manuel Miranda has anything to do with it, and that Gisele can still cause a stir by walking in a straight line.
When it comes to interior design, MDG's own Marlena shares her reflections, lessons learned and offers her predictions for design trends on the up and up.
Can you tell me a bit about any projects you're working on? Currently I am working on the design concept to finish a basement in Morrison, which will include an new fireplace and a wet bar (psst, there's a sneak peak of the concept below.) Another fun project is a small remodel and decor package in Highlands Ranch. I also do a lot of lighting projects so I would say 4,3 and even 2 inch LED recessed cans
After meeting a new client and getting an idea of what they're looking for, where does your inspiration come from? I am usually inspired by the design problem they are asking me to fix. I want to help them find a solution and make that solution pretty and more functional.
What design element would you consider is your signature? I love symmetry and balance. I always say design is a fine balance of light, textures, volume, and colors!
What have you noticed a lot of your clients have been asking for this year? Well, if we're talking trends right now, I would say, quartz counter tops, stacked stone, edison bulbs, bronze and antique gold metal finishes, grayish wood floors and cabinetry.
What's one big thing you've learned about small business? There's obviously a lot to know and learn about business. The most important thing I have learned is to not be afraid or ashamed to ask for help. There are plenty of other business owners who have started from the beginning and are always willing to give advice if you just ask.
What do you love most of all about running a small business? I seriously love it all. Even the tasks I'm not really into, once I realize I'm not good at it then I get to find someone awesome who can help me manage the task!
What are you excited about for the coming year? Building the MDG portfolio and meeting new, great people!
